B.C.'s commissioner for teacher regulation oversees conduct of classroom professionals in the province.

A Chilliwack teacher had his teaching certificate suspended for a day for twice making comments with sexual content to students.

Inclusion teacher Robert Luke Acheson also made comments about the physical appearances of a student and a staff member, according to the consent resolution agreement released June 24 by B.C.’s commissioner for teacher regulation.

“Acheson failed to maintain appropriate professional boundaries in discussions with students, by sharing inappropriate stories that included inappropriate content of a sexual nature, and by inappropriately commenting on the appearance of students and other staff,” said commissioner Donnaree Nygard.

On June 16, 2023, the Chilliwack School District disciplined Acheson by issuing a letter of discipline and suspending him for 15 days without pay.

He was also directed to take a professional boundaries course and no longer permitted him to take assignments that worked with vulnerable students.

The agreement said Acheson completed the Justice Institute of BC's respectful professional boundaries course between Aug. 9 and 11, 2023.

On Aug. 15, 2023, the commissioner ordered an investigation under the Teachers Act.
